Few concerns re virus?

Postby Weluvztehbooks » Sat Jan 02, 2010 2:58 am

I just found this very interesting looking software but being the very cautious person I am I ran a virus scan as well as uploaded the portable version to both VirusTotal & VirSCAN and both of those services came back with some potentially /very/ disturbing results. I wanted to come here and see if you could clear up the results with confirmation that it's false positives or answer with what's going on.

Here are the results.

    File angelsvox-portable.zip received on 2010.01.02 02:34:48 (UTC)
Current status: Loading ... queued waiting scanning finished NOT FOUND STOPPED
    Result: 9/39 (23.08%)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Antivirus..........Version............Last Update...................Results
    Authentium.......5.2.0.5..........2010.01.02..........W32/RLPacked.B.gen!Eldorado
    AVG................8.5.0.430.......2010.01.01..........Win32/Cryptor
    Comodo...........3444.............2010.01.02..........Heur.Packed.Unknown
    F-Prot.............4.5.1.85.........2010.01.02..........W32/RLPacked.B.gen!Eldorado
    F-Secure..........9.0.15370.0.....2010.01.02..........Suspicious:W32/Riskware!Online

    Norman...........6.04.03..........2009.12.31..........Dialer.dam
    Panda.............10.0.2.2.........2010.01.01..........Suspicious file
    VirusBuster.......5.0.21.0.........2010.01.01..........Packed/RLPack
VirSCAN was similar and no need for me to post the findings here (also their virus versions & definitions were a few version behind but it found quite a few as well)

So, my question is how can there be /that/ many false positives? I have a few ideas but I'd like to hear from you first before I state what my suspicions/guesses are.
Look forward to hearing back from you as this software looks very promising and exactly what a friend of mine has been looking for. (ability to listen to audio books and have it shut off for when they go to sleep).
Thanks for your time; both in reading/replying and for creating this. :Yahoo!:

Hello and thank you for your interest in Angel's Vox audiobook player!

These alarms happened because of an executable compressor plus strong protector in-one, despite the software itself was free (and is free :-)) of malicious code. Most of the free antiviral solutions could not unpack AngelVox.exe and wrote that it is suspicious/infected. We were seriously considering to distribute our player totally unprotected, so we've rebuilt both the portable and installable versions and reuploaded them. Please download it again.

Sorry for my slow getting back to this thread, I see you were VERY quick though on the reply and fixing of this "issue" so to speak.
Thank you for explaining what was going on, and not only that but 'fixing' it so that those who don't take the time to come here and read this won't even have to worry now!
I thought it might have something to do with how it was packed, or maybe the way that it interacted with the OS with the shutdown feature but wasn't sure so I came here and asked. So, thank you again for being open and explaining a little bit on what was going on under the hood. :) /thumbs up
I'll definitely be giving this software a good try and will also be passing it on to the person who was looking for something exactly like this. I'm glad I came across this software as I didn't even think to look for an app such as this thinking none would exists; and judging by the date on the first version this one wasn't born too long ago!
Have a good one and good luck with this software app. It's nice to see new ideas like this one pop up from time to time! :D

PS> Quick question. I'm assuming the reason for the file size of the exe increase is due to the new way the exe is packed (not compressed now)?

Also out of curiosity how come other applications can encrypt their exe's but the virus scanners can still 'read' them? Reason I ask is I'd hate for you to have to distribute your software "unprotected" and have your code/ideas potentially stolen. Or am I miss-understanding how that part of it works?
Anyway thanks again for taking the time to read & reply. It's much appreciated. :Rose:

You're right.

I think commercial apps (like ESET's, McAfee) utilize more unpacking techniques. As I said, we used strong protector with strong options, and not every free antivirus could handle the results. Maybe we'll be thinking about protection's alternatives, weaker and simpler. But there are no uncrackable solutions, so it's better to concentrate on improvement the current functions and making new ones, isn't it?

Thank you!
